Great Wines From Great Friends

We met Bill and Jane Ballentine as a result of a trip to the Hayne Vineyard in St. Helena. That afternoon we tasted every vintage of their William Cole Cuvee Claire, became quick friends, and left with as much wine as we could carry! Bill is a third generation winemaker from Napa Valley; here are a few gems from our list that he makes for other labels, and for his own.

Chase Zinfandel, Centennial Harvest, Hayne Vineyard, Napa Valley, 03 $70

A classic Zinfandel from one of the oldest family owned vineyards in the Napa Valley.

Raspberry and cherry fruit is balanced a by silky smooth mouth feel and an old-vine jam and chocolate finish.

William Cole, “Cuvee Claire”, Napa Valley, 01 $200

A striking Cabernet. Every aspect is in balance; fruit, tannin, and acidity all march to the same drum in this layered and lingering wine. Get some before it’s discovered! We also offer William Cole from the 00 vintage. This wine regularly tops Colgin and Harlan in blind tastings.

Interesting and Adventuresome Reds

Take a break from Cabernet and Merlot with one of these great alternatives!

Sangiovese…Difficult to do well; these are great!

Jeff Runquist, Pioneer Hill Vyd, Amador, 02 $38

Showket Vineyards, Oakville, 02 $58

Petite Syrah…Dark, Deep, and Delicious

Rosenblum Cellars, Rhodes Vineyard, Redwood Valley, 03 $57

Luna Vineyards, CA, 03 $70

Cabernet Franc…Aromatic and Herbaceous, with Soft Tannins

Robert Sinskey Vineyards, Los Carneros, Carneros, 01 $65

Niebaum Coppola, “Rubicon Estate”, Rutherford, 03 $85

Charbono…Full fruit, rich and complex

Turley Wine Cellars Charbono, Tofanelli Vineyard, Napa Valley, 01 $140

Familiar Reds

Pinot Noir

Arista, Ferrington Vineyard, Russian River Valley, 03 $94

Cutting edge California Pinot with firm Russian River fruit, offering cherry and bramble, but also Burgundian depth and elegance. We are so happy we decided to go up their driveway last Fall! Excellent!

Rutz, “Maison Gran Cru”, Russian River Valley, 03 $45

Michaud, Chalone, Monterey County, 03 $74

Lynmar, Quail Hill Vineyard, Russian River Valley, 03 $84

Clos des Reas, Vosne-Romanee, 1er Cru, Monopole, 03 $170

Domaine Serene, “Yamhill Cuvee”, Willamette Valley, 04 $65

Siduri, Amber Ridge Vineyard, Russian River Valley, 04 $105

Laetitia, “Limite”, Arroyo Grande Valley, 05 $40

Siduri, Sonoma County, 05 $45

Morgan Winery, “Twelve Clones”, Santa Lucia Highlands, 05 $60

Adelsheim Vineyard, Willamette Valley, 05 $60

Holdredge, Russian River Valley, 05 $62

Zinfandel

Porter Creek, Old Vine, Sonoma County, 04 $60

A rich and heady Zin with dark jammy fruit that spreads across a wide palette, picking up some spice for the nice long finish.

Howell Mountain Vineyard, Beatty Ranch Vyd, Howell Mountain, 02 $70

Zahtila Vineyards, Dry Creek, 03 $40

Green and Red, Chiles Mill Vineyard, Napa Valley, 03 $48

Chase, “Centennial Harvest”, Hayne Vineyard, Napa Valley, 03 $69

Rosenblum Cellars, Rockpile Road Vineyard, Sonoma County, 03 $80

Arista, Russian River Valley, 04 $45

Seghesio Family Vineyards, “Old Vine”, Sonoma County, 04 $62

Outpost, Howell Mountain, 04 $80

Turley Wine Cellars, Moore “Earthquake” Vineyard, Napa Valley, 04 $94

Syrah

Mollydooker, “The Boxer”, Mc. Laren Vale, 05 $60

This wine has been much talked about, and for good reason. We call wines like this “Monsters”; usually our Monsters cost a lot more than this one. Huge dark fruit, classic smoke, black pepper and seared meat on the nose. Dark chocolate and even bigger fruit explode on the palette with silky tannins and well balanced acidity. Finishing long and strong, this is an astounding wine for the price.

Terre Rouge, Sentinel Oak Vineyard, Pyramid Block, Shenandoah Vly, 01 $70

Cordon of Santa Barbera, Lafond Vineyard, Santa Rita Hills, 02 $42

Four Vines Cellars, Paso Robles, 02 $60

La Sirena, Santa Ynez, 02 $78

Torbreck, “Woodcutters”, Barossa Valley, 04 $40

Two Hands Winery Shiraz, “Angel’s Share”, McLaren Vale, 04 $70

Merlot

Vine Cliff, Napa Valley, 01 $60

Wow, what a big Merlot! Nice dark fruit, structured tannin and acidity, and a great finish that leaves you wondering why more wines can’t be like this at this price.

Judd’s Hill, Juliana Vineyard, Napa Valley, 99 $56

Luna Vineyards, Napa Valley, 01 $47

White Oak, Napa Valley, 02 $35

Seven Hills, Seven Hills Vineyard, Walla Walla Valley, 02 $60

Shafer, Napa Valley, 03 $84

Shafer, Napa Valley, 04 $84

Cabernet Sauvignon

Zahtila Vineyards, Beckstoffer Vineyard, Georges III, Napa Valley, 02 $94

Andy Beckstoffer grows some of the most sought after Cabernet fruit in the Napa Valley, and Corey Beck does a great job crafting this beautiful wine. A floral nose with plums and red cherry gives way to earth, leather, and great acidity.
